Ooty is a hill station in the Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu, India. It is located around 100 km from Coimbatore. The name “Ooty” is derived from the Tamil word “Oottai” which means “the place where the clouds rest”. The city has a population of over 35,000 people and covers an area of 462 km². The town was founded in 1829 when Major James Stuart and his wife were building their summer home at Ooty, about 500 km north of Madras (now Chennai). They named it after a lake near their house called "Ootacamund". In 1835, it became officially known as Ooty (meaning "lake"). The climate here is considered to be temperate with a mean annual temperature of 20°C and an average rainfall of 1,600 mm. The average annual rainfall is 2,500 mm but this figure varies widely from 1,200 mm on the lowlands to 3,000 mm in some parts of the Nilgiri hills.
