Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple

Kothandaramaswamy Temple

The Kothandaramaswamy Temple at Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu is a shrine dedicated to the Hindu deity Rama. Located at a distance of 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) from Rameswaram, it forms the southernmost tip of the island.[1] The temple is the only historical structure to survive the 1964 cyclone that washed away Dhanushkodi. The temple has the deities of Rama, Lakshmana, Sita, Hanuman and Vibhishana. The temple is surrounded by sea and remains a tourist attraction. It is easily accessible from Rameswaram.

The Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge or Pamban Bridge is a cantilever bridge on Palk Strait that boasts of being the first sea bridge of India and connects Rameshwaram (Rameswaram) .Constructed over the Palk Strait, this 6,776 feet long bridge was opened to traffic in the year 1914. It is a double leaf drawbridge or bascule bridge that can be raised to make way for ships.

 

Kalam National Memorial

Abdul Kalam who was the 11th president of India. Kalam was born and brought up in Rameswaram and became a scientist and worked for DRDO and ISRO. Jada Tirtham

Jada Tirtham is a small temple and holds its own mythological importance. Constructed near the trunk of a large peepal tree, the temple hosts two grand events – Maha shivarathiri (once every year) celebration and Maha Makam (Once in 12 Years). Rameshwaram has 64 tanks or theerthams, of which 22 are inside the Ramanathaswamy Temple and the rest outside in different forms. On the way to Dhanushkodi, about 3.5 km from the Ramanathaswamy Temple is the Jada theertham. This is the place where Lord Rama and Lakshmana washed their hair (Jada) after killing Ravana. This was done as an act of purifying themselves and headed to worship lord Shiva from here.

Gandhamadhana Parvatham

Located in the north-western part of Rameswaram, Gandhamadhana Parvatham is a very popular sunrise and sunset viewpoint. The temple of Gandhamadhana is highly renowned and worshipped in the southern India as well as visited by people from far across.Mt. Gandhamadana is the tallest peak on Pamban Island which lies in the Palk Strait between mainland India and Sri Lanka. It is believed by many people that Lord Hanuman resides there. Jatayu Tirtham

Jatayu Tirtham is a sacred temple dedicated to Jatayu . He was the most loyal eagle of Lord Rama and is believed to have helped Lord Rama in several crisis situations. It is said that the eagle lost its life in order to save Lord Rama and hence it is worshipped as a deity. In the Hindu epic Ramayana, Jatayu (Sanskrit: जटायुः, IAST: Jaṭāyuḥ) is a demi-god who has the form of a vulture or eagle. He is the younger son of Aruṇa and his wife Shyeni, the brother of Sampati, as well as the nephew of Garuda and an old friend of Dasharatha (Rama's father).

19. Thiruppullani

The Adi Jagannatha Temple is a South Indian Hindu temple in Thiruppullani, a village in the outskirts of Ramanathapuram in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. It is believed that Rama used grass ('pul' in Tamil as a pillow (thalai annai in Tamil) to sleep and hence the village attained the name Thiruppullani. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar saints from the 6th–9th centuries CE. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Adi Jagannatha and his consort Lakshmi as Padmasini.

 

Sugreevar Temple

Sugreevar Temple or Theertham is located on the way to the Gandhamadana Parvatam. As Sugriva of Ramayana was worshipped here, this place was known as Kurakkuthali. Sundarar in hymns refers to this place which belonged to Kurumbar Nadu. Inscriptions of Cholas, Pandyas and Udayars are found in this temple. During the time of meeting of Dakshinayana and Uttarayana the rays of the Sun fall on the deity.[3] In inscriptions the deity is known as Aludaya Pillai. He is also known as Milakeesan. This place was called as Mukundapuri and Mukundaipuri.[2]

The town was destroyed during the 1964 Rameswaram cyclone and remains uninhabited in the aftermath.
